The Heart and Stroke Foundation, in partnership with the SAPNA, the United Tamil Council of Canada (UTCC), and the Toronto Emergency Medical Services, is making it simple for the South Asian community to learn CPR. Participants will become familiar with CPR, and learn how to use Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) that may also be a life-saver if used on someone in cardiac arrest. The first 75 participants will receive a free Heart and Stroke Foundation CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ Kit -- a portable CPR course in a box designed to teach people who want to learn lifesaving CPR skills in only 22 minutes from the comfort of their own home.
The Healthy Living for Tamils event will include a talk by Dr. Pon Sivaji who will speak about the risk factors of heart disease and stroke for the South Asian community. The South Asian community has a three to five fold increased risk of heart attack and death from cardiovascular disease compared to other ethnic populations. South Asians also experience cardiac arrest at a significantly younger age than other communities.
This event will be in English and Tamil. |
